The New 2020 Porsche 911 Speedster

Porsche 911 Speedster Heritage Edition

2020 Porsche 911 Speedster

First unveiled in Zuffenhausen last summer, followed by the 2018 Rennsport Reunion in Monterey, the new Porsche 911 Speedster was an instant hit with Porsche enthusiasts. So much so that just a few months after its unveiling the project was approved for full production. In total just 1948 examples would be made, a number commemorating the 70 years since the first Porsche 356 was built. As we now approach summer, the first production models have now been officially unveiled, perfect timing for this open-top roadster.

Developed at Porsche Motorsport in Weissach and in collaboration with Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, this new Porsche 911 Speedster is built on the well-proven 991 platform. Taking the best bits from all other Porsche 911 models before it, this new 911 Speedster will be the final car built on the 991 platform, before the introduction of the 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera later this year. The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera will be built on the all-new 992 platform, setting the stage for an entirely new generation of Porsche 911 models.

70 Years of Inspiration

Designed with several generations of Porsche Speedster in mind, the new 2020 Porsche 911 Speedster has some truly iconic features which sets it apart from the rest of the 911 model lineup. The two most notable are the raked windshield and the tonneau roof, replacing a traditional cabriolet top. This sleek profile is a callback to the original Porsche 356 Speedster, and has been a consistent styling point for all generations of Porsche Speedster. The standard-option Guards Red paint is another callback, this time to the 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster. The 1989 model, offered exclusively in Guards Red paint, was the first contemporary Speedster since the Porsche 356, and is now a highly-valued collector car. If red isn't your color, the available Heritage Design Package will surely impress. This optional package adds GT Silver Metallic paint and white roundels, giving it the appearance of a 1950's Porsche race car. Further details like brown leather seats and gold exterior badging really complete this vintage-inspired look.

Vintage Style, Modern Performance

Now although the body shape of the new Porsche 911 Speedster more closely resembles the Porsche 911 4 Cabriolet, the underpinnings all come from the current 911 GT3. Powered by the Porsche 911 GT3's naturally-aspirated flat-six and fitted with individual throttle bodies for added performance, the new 911 Speedster produces just over 500 horsepower. Perhaps best of all, however, is the standard-equipped 6-speed manual transmission. This manual transmission saves nearly 40 pounds over the dual-clutch PDK, and is sure to please enthusiasts. Speaking of weight savings, the new 911 Speedster features carbon fiber body panels throughout, reducing weight and allowing the car to accelerate from 0-60 MPG in just 3.2 seconds, making it the fastest Porsche 911 Speedster ever.
